The Statue of Liberty’s lights went out on Tuesday, becoming a trending topic across social media as people took the timely darkness as a symbol of the discrimination women face in the US.

Although the lights were out for just an hour, it was enough to convince people that it was a symbolic sign. Some thought the blackout was part of the ‘Day Without Women’, while others said it was a protest against new White House immigration policies.

The ‘Day Without Women’ will see women go on strike from their jobs and not do any domestic work in an effort to highlight “the current racist and misogynist policies of Trump as well as the decades long neoliberal attacks on working people’s lives, which created the conditions for Trump,” the organizers said.

According to the National Parks Service, the body responsible for the maintenance of the iconic site, the lights went out due to a power outage.

Others saw Lady Liberty’s descent into darkness as a statement on President Trump’s immigration policy. Some were angry at the thought that the darkness could have been the work of a protester.
