Manchester's big wheel is to stay in the city centre for a further two weeks, while talks to replace it with an even bigger attraction take place.

The 60m (196ft) wheel in Exchange Square was set to be dismantled on Sunday but council bosses have given it a last minute reprieve.

Separate negotiations to bring a 91m (300ft) "monster" wheel to Piccadilly Gardens will continue on Monday.

Tests are currently being carried out to see whether the site is suitable.

The new wheel, which like the London Eye would be in continual motion, could be in place next year.

A big wheel first arrived in Manchester in 2004, and although it was never meant to be a permanent attraction, has since become an icon on the city's skyline.

The gondolas offer views for miles with each providing commentary on the surrounding landscape.
