More than 700 homes are without electricity after a United Utilities substation was broken into by vandals.

The power has been off in 354 homes in Chesham Fold and in a further 409 in Radcliffe, Bury, Greater Manchester, since Friday night.

United Utilities said some cables had been damaged, causing the fault.

A spokesman said its engineers must now make internal inspections of wiring at all of the affected properties before supplies can be restored.

He said: "The health and safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us and we will endeavour to carry out our inspections as quickly and efficiently as possible over the next few days.

"It is extremely unfortunate that the mindless acts of others has led to this inconvenience for our customers.

"Vandals should think about the consequences their actions have on others and we would urge these people to refrain from demonstrating this sort of anti-social behaviour in the future."
