Safe Sleeping for Babies

Free Bassinets Encourage Safe Sleeping” (news article, Feb. 13): I was glad to hear that my state is in the forefront of encouraging safe sleeping conditions for babies. While parents probably put their baby to sleep safely at home, it’s imperative that they make sure their day care provider does the same. Sleep experts now know that approximately 20 percent of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, deaths happen in child care settings, most commonly in the first week. This fact is mentioned in many articles, training lessons and blogs, yet the very person who is taking care of one’s baby may put the child to sleep on his or her stomach. My grandson died two years ago in a New Jersey day care center, when the day care worker put him down to sleep incorrectly. BONNIE FREIDENREICH Edison, N.J. |
