A charter plane has crashed into the Direct Factory Outlet shopping mall near Essendon airport in Melbourne, killing several people, the prime minister of the state of Victoria has announced.
“It appears a light plane, which is a charter flight, has impacted the DFO [Direct Factory Outlet shopping center] at Essendon Fields,” Police Minister Lisa Neville told ABC news. "A number of people have died as a result of what is the worst civil aviation accident that our state has seen for 30 years," Victoria premier Daniel Andrews was quoted as saying by AFP.
Earlier police said that five people were aboard the aircraft. Andrews, however, did not elaborate whether all the people killed were aboard the ill-fated plane or on the ground.
The incident happened at around 9am local time Tuesday. It’s understood the flight took off at 8:30am from Essendon, which Reuters reports is a small airfield mainly used by light planes, and was bound for King Island. The incident happened at around 9am local time Tuesday.
