A passenger train has derailed on the way from Leuven to Brussels in Belgium, with about 20 people possibly injured, a spokesperson for railway operator SNCB told local media. The Mayor of Leuven Louis Tobback confirmed to the DeRedactie news agency that one person has died.
One death has been reported by local VTM Nieuws media outlet, which cited firefighters at the scene. “The victim who died, was not on the train," said Tobback when speaking to local media, as reported by VTM.
The outlet also reported that there were about a hundred people on the train, and at least one carriage overturned. It is also reported that there were between 50 and 60 passengers on the train. At least one carriage overturned as the train was exiting the Leuven station at approximately 13:20 local time.
