Police 'know' Derry man's killers

The PSNI have said they know who was responsible for the murder of 22-year-old Emmett Shiels in the Creggan area of Londonderry.

Mr Shiels, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was shot in the Bligh's Lane area at about 0045 BST on Tuesday.

Two men have been arrested and are being questioned by police.

Speaking at a press conference in Creggan, Detective Chief Inspector Frankie Taylor said he believed five or six people were involved.

"We know who they are and they know who they are.

"They should do the right thing and come forward," he said.

Emmett Shiels was driving a pizza delivery van when he was caught up in a confrontation with five or six masked gunmen.

Up to 1,000 people attended a vigil in memory of Mr Shiels in the city on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, Mr Sheils's family thanked the people of Derry for their support during their ordeal.

"We don't want anybody else in Derry to go through what we're going through because we're finding this very very hard to deal with," said his brother Kevin Moore.

"Emmett was taken from us and it was a stupid and senseless act and he shouldn't have been taken," he said.

Mr Shiels's sister, Maureen Wilkinson, said anyone with information should go to the police or community representatives.

"We don't want any retaliation, we want these people brought to justice," she said.

Among those who attended the vigil, near the scene of the shooting, were Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness of Sinn Féin and the mayor of Derry, Gerard Diver of the SDLP.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Shaun Woodward has condemned the murder of Mr Shiels.

He told the House of Commons it was important the parties reached agreement on devolution of policing and justice. Advertisement

The SDLP leader and MP for Foyle, Mark Durkan, said Mr Shiels was "a young man robbed of his life".

DUP MP David Simpson offered his sympathy to Mr Shiels's family on behalf of his party.

"It was a tragedy that should never have happened," he said.
