Re “Way Is Cleared for Largest U.S. Offshore Wind Farm” (Business Day, Jan. 26):

The approval of the Deepwater Wind farm by the Long Island Power Authority is a welcome bit of news to light up these dark days since the election!

Yes, we have a president who is hostile to every step that must be taken to avert the worst ravages of climate change. Yes, his cabinet appointments and first pronouncements promise regressive federal action on the environment. But New York has now shown that states, working together with private industry, can lead the way on climate action.

This development is proof that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s decision to mandate offshore wind power as part of the Clean Energy Plan for New York was the right one. The state should use its leadership position to attract investment and renewable energy industries to jump-start the economy upstate and in the Southern Tier.

President Trump insists that he’s the world’s best businessman, but he doesn’t recognize the opportunities inherent in fighting climate change. New York can beat him at his own game.
