"The attacker walked up to a Nato convoy patrolling in a market in Girishk district and detonated explosives strapped to his body," provincial police chief Mohammad Hussain Andiwal told AFP news agency.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but Taleban militants, ousted from power in late 2001 by a US-led invasion, have claimed almost all similar attacks in the past.
