The body of a British man gunned down outside his home in the British Virgin Islands has been flown back to the UK.

Vincent Connolly, 50, from Dorset, was found dead on the driveway to his apartment on Virgin Gorda in October.

Mr Connolly was working as a project manager overseeing building work at a local five-star hotel.

He had been shot four times - above the eye, in both arms and in one leg, probably with a handgun. Police on the island said nobody had been arrested.

Mr Connolly, known as "Vinny", had lived in the British Virgin Islands for six years, having worked on Tortola before moving to Gorda.

Karate expert

The talented saxophone player lived alone on the island, but his wife Janet, son Jak, 23, and his schoolteacher daughter Lauren, 21, live in Poole, Dorset.

A Dorset Police spokesman said his body was repatriated to Dorset on Saturday and an inquest was opened and adjourned on Monday.

The spokesman said the cause of death was gunshot wounds to the head. "Our thoughts are with his family," he said.

The killing was the first murder on Virgin Gorda since 1999

The killing was the first murder on Virgin Gorda since 1999.

Mr Connolly, a black belt karate expert, had been drinking in bars with friends on the night he was murdered.

Police have said that Mr Connolly was assaulted last year when a bottle was smashed over his head in a bar.

There was an ongoing court case, and Mr Connolly had given evidence in relation to the incident.
