Man carried into A&E 'murdered' Appeals over A&E murder mystery
(20 minutes later)
A murder inquiry has been launched after a fatally injured man was carried in and left at the A&E department of the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. Murder detectives want to speak to a man claiming to be the brother of a fatally injured man carried in and left at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.
Police are eager to trace two men - thought to be of south east Asian origin - who were seen helping the dead man into hospital. Following police appeals, hospital staff received a call from a man at around 2300 GMT on Tuesday.
The injured man, who later died, was aged between 25-35 but police have been unable to identify him. He was told to ring Gwent Police but no call was ever made to officers.
Gwent Police can be contacted on 01633 642597 or anonymously on 0800 555 111. Police also want to trace two men of south east Asian origin who carried the victim into accident and emergency and left without giving details.
During a press conference on Tuesday, detectives said they have not ruled in or ruled out links with organised crime. The dead man, whose identity is still unknown, was suffering from serious head injuries when he was brought into hospital by the two men at about 1400 GMT on Monday.
There is no indication he was shot or stabbed but he had some very serious injuries which resulted in his death DS Geoff Ronayne Despite efforts by surgeons, he died later that day.
Detective Superintendent Geoff Ronayne said the injured man was brought into the hospital at about 1400GMT on Monday. He underwent surgery but died at 2230 GMT. Police have issued pictures of the victims clothing
"The victim had serious injuries and we don't know how he came by these injuries," he said, adding that some of them appeared to have been inflicted deliberately. CCTV footage shows the victim being carried into the hospital but despite an appeal to the public, few calls have been made to police with information.
"The two men had a conversation with a staff member in the car park where they asked where they could take their friend. However, staff at the hospital did answer a telephone call from a man inquiring about the condition of the victim who he claimed was his brother.
"There is no indication he was shot or stabbed but he had some very serious injuries which resulted in his death. The two men were clearly intent on getting him as quick as possible into the hospital and as getting out as quick as possible." Det Supt Geoff Ronayne said: "We urge this individual to come forward. He may be able to offer vital information to assist our inquiry.
Officers said that they were examining missing person reports and working with community leaders to try and get people who may usually be unwilling to go to the police to come forward with any information. "Disappointingly we received very few calls overnight and today.
Police want to speak to the men about what happened "The man was carried into the hospital at a very busy time of day and the immediate vicinity was full of people and cars.
"The ethnic background of the men is unknown, however, we believe it to be South East Asian - possibly Thai, Malaysian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Filipino, or Indonesian," Mr Ronayne added. "Someone must have seen something. No matter how irrelevant the information may seem it could help piece together the circumstances of this crime."
"We would also ask for anyone who may know or recognise the men from the images to contact the police." Two men carried the injured men into hospital before leaving
Detectives are still trying to determine the identity of the two men who brought the man into the hospital.
