Surfer's royal wedding day honour

Chris Hines, from Cornwall, has been included in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to the environment. The 46-year-old said he was delighted and thought he was probably the first surfer to receive an honour. He ran the environmental campaigning organisation Surfers Against Sewage from 1990 until 2000. I think I'm the first surfer to receive the honour, and it is an honour Chris Hines MBE Mr Hines, who helped develop an eco-friendly surfboard while sustainability director at the Eden project in Cornwall, said: "I'm delighted. It is not only great news for me but also for the oceans and the environment and for surfing. "I think I'm the first surfer to receive the honour and it is an honour." His wedding is due to take place later. He said: "I was quite shocked. I feel very humble really because there are a lot of excellent people in the Cornish fishing industry and unsung heroes." Sue Nelson, from Helston, has been a coastguard for 29 years. She will be appointed an MBE for her work training other coastguards to co-ordinate search and rescue operations. She said she was "stunned, delighted and lost for words" when she heard the news. Nicola Lyons, from Callington, receives an MBE for her work as a volunteer with the Search and Rescue Dog Association for England and her involvement in local mountain rescue operations. |
