Five people have been killed and over 20 were wounded as a cargo train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed and exploded in northeastern Bulgaria, local police report. A full evacuation has been ordered in a northeastern Bulgarian village after a cargo train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed and exploded, killing five people and wounding 29 more.
The train going through the Shumen province in the country’s northeast carried 26 tanks of propane-butane. They exploded after the derailment, destroying a few buildings, and claiming a few lives, too. Residents of the village of Khitrino in the Shumen province of Bulgaria are being evacuated after the train, which was carrying 26 tanks of propane-butane, derailed not far from the local train station. 
“The explosion has also caused a fire. We do not expect a second blast, but the people from the village are being evacuated,” local fire department chief Nikolai Nikolov said, as cited by Reuters. The population of the village is about 700, Bulgarian Nova TV reported.
Twelve people were removed from under the rubble, with medics and firefighters still working at the scene. Some of the tanks exploded after the derailment, destroying at least 50 buildings and claiming five lives. The number of casualties is expected to rise.
Some people are being transferred to relatives in nearby villages, while others are being temporarily placed in a building of a military college in the city of Shumen.
Security forces will remain to protect the houses of the evacuated people from looting.
