Dormice made welcome by golf club

Golfers in Surrey are helping to improve the habitat for dormice, whose numbers have been declining so much they are now protected by law.

In a joint project with the Surrey Wildlife Trust and the local council, Guildford Golf Club is installing special nesting boxes for the mice.

It is also returning to traditional methods of woodland management and installing some owl boxes.

It follows a £500 donation from the golf club towards a dormouse survey.

Dormice, which are nocturnal, have been found in a number of places in Surrey and are especially abundant on Merrow Downs, where the golf course is located.
