More than 20 people have been killed and many are feared trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings after a 6.5 earthquake struck off Aceh province on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, according to officials. The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Indonesia has risen to 93 as the rescue operation in the Aceh province continues, local authorities reported. The 6.5 magnitude quake hit off coast of Sumatra Island on Wednesday.
At least 25 people have been killed in the Pidie Jaya district of Aceh province, district head Aiyub Abbas said, according to AP. Hundreds more have been injured after dozens of buildings collapsed. The tremor also caused damage to buildings in the affected area and send residents fleeing in panic.
The Red Cross also put the number of fatalities at 25.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that “several buildings” collapsed, including at least 10 shops and four houses in Pidie Jaya, which lies in the Aceh special region of Indonesia.
