A convicted bomb plotter who threw boiling oil over a fellow inmate has had his jail sentence extended.

Omar Khyam, part of a terror cell which planned a series of explosions across south-east England, attacked Malcolm Cruddas at Durham's Frankland Prison.

The 32-year-old armed robber suffered burns to his head and upper body.

Khyam, of Crawley, Sussex, who admitted causing grievous bodily harm, was given a four-year term in addition to the life sentence he is already serving.

The 26-year-old was jailed for a minimum of 20 years in April 2007 for plotting to bomb targets including Kent's Bluewater shopping centre, London's Ministry of Sound nightclub and gas and electricity supplies.

During sentencing at Teesside Crown Court, Khyam claimed there was a plot by other inmates to attack him.

The 17 October attack followed a similar scalding incident at the prison when al-Qaeda inmate Dhiren Barot was seriously burned with oil.

He needed skin grafts, but an assault charge against another inmate was dropped on the request of Barot.
