A 39-year-old man is due to appear in Belfast Magistrates Court later charged with the kidnapping of a mother and her young son in County Down.

He also faces charges of false imprisonment and robbery. A 39-year-old woman has been released without charge.

The mother and child were taken hostage from their Killough home on Wednesday. They were held in south Belfast.

The woman's partner, employed by a financial institution, was told to get ransom money, believed to be £200,000.

Later, the woman freed herself and her son, who is four years old. She alerted police.

They had been held at a vacant house in the Ravenhill area.
