The leader of broadcasting workers' union Bectu, Roger Bolton, has died after a long battle with cancer.

Mr Bolton, 59, who died at the weekend, was elected general secretary of the union in 1993 and held the position until his death.

Gerry Morrissey, Bectu's assistant general secretary, said Mr Bolton would be "sorely missed" by his colleagues.

The union leader was involved in many disputes during his career, including a pay strike at the BBC in 1989.

Mr Morrissey said: "Roger fought his illness with the same courage and conviction he displayed when faced with discrimination and unfairness in the workplace.

"Roger will be sadly missed by his colleagues at Bectu, by workers in the audio-visual and entertainment industries and the wider trade union movement."
