A prisoner has escaped from police custody in County Down.

Leon Chakravarti was last seen at Grove Gardens in Killyleagh at about 1600 BST on Thursday.

It is understood that the 21-year-old had earlier presented himself at Downpatrick courthouse where he was arrested.

Chakravarti is describing as being as 5ft 8ins, with black hair and a pierced chin. He speaks with a Northern Ireland accent.

When last seen he was wearing a grey T-shirt and blue jeans.

A PSNI spokeswoman said "officers believe he may now still be in Killyleagh or the Downpatrick area."
