A former babysitter who admitted abusing eight children in his care has been jailed for 12 years at Downpatrick Crown Court.

Kevin Carville, 49, of Liscorran Court in Lurgan, abused the four boys and four girls in their own home and his flat in Castlewellan, County Down.

The children were aged between five and 14 at the time of the abuse which happened between 1978 and 1990.

One victim described him as "a devious cunning man".

Despite initially denying the allegations against him, the father of one pleaded guilty to 22 offences, including seven of indecent assault and 12 of gross indecency with or towards a child.

The abuse came to light in November 2004 when three of the victims went to the police.

The remaining children came forward during the subsequent investigation.

Judge Peter Gibson ordered Carville to remain on the sex offenders register for life and banned him from ever associating with his victims and other children.

"He was in a position of trust and abused it to satisfy his sexual desires," he said.
