The ambulance was travelling to the John Radcliffe Hospital, where all the parties involved in the incident were later treated.

A police spokesman said the ambulance was being followed by a police car, which was not involved in the collision.

The A40 was closed for five hours until 0600 BST between the Wolvercote roundabout and the Eynsham roundabout.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was driving on the A40 around 1am today and either saw this collision or the lead up to it."
