Muslims jailed for killing Hindus
(about 1 hour later) | |
A court in the western Indian state of Gujarat has given life sentences to six young Muslims for killing two Hindus.
The killings in the town of Mahuda in November 2002 occurred after an altercation between Hindu and Muslim groups over a game of cricket.
The court also fined each of the guilty 10,000 rupees ($220).
Gujarat has a history of religious tension. In March 2002 more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed in Hindu-Muslim riots.
Acquittals | |
Nine people were charged and tried for the murder of the Hindu youths who were brothers, public prosecutor Paresh Dohra said.
He said he would appeal against the aquittal of three others.
There have been several incidents of religious violence in Gujarat since 2002.
The bloodshed, some of the worst since partition in 1947, took place after a fire in a train claimed the lives of 59 Hindus. Muslims were accused of attacking the train.
The state administration was heavily criticised for failing to come to the aid of Muslim victims as violence engulfed the state.
It denied the allegations. |
