Police attended almost 6,400 domestic violence incidents in Northern Ireland last year.

The figure was revealed as the Policing Board announced an inquiry into the effectiveness of the PSNI in tackling domestic violence against women.

Police responded to more than 23,000 domestic incidents in 2007-2008, 6,389 of a violent nature.

Assembly and Policing Board member Basil McCrea said it showed domestic violence was an endemic problem.

"The majority of victims of domestic violence are women and this is core policing business," he said.

"It is therefore important and proper that the Policing Board monitor the PSNI's approach to tackling domestic violence against women as part of an overall framework."
