Ashes batsmen get chance to star England rocked by early wickets
(about 8 hours later)
England's batsmen have the chance to show they can challenge Australia without Marcus Trescothick when their final warm-up game resumes on day two. England lost two early wickets on day two of their final Ashes warm-up game against South Australia in Adelaide.
Alastair Cook, promoted to opener when Trescothick went home with a stress-related illness, resumes on six. Resuming on 24-1, the tourists added five runs before Shaun Tait dismisssed night-watchman Matthew Hoggard for 10.
Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood follow him, against a South Australia attack Jason Gillespie and Shaun Tait. Six runs later, Jason Gillespie removed Alastair Cook, who was promoted to opener when Marcus Trescothick went home, leaving England reeling on 34-3.
Tait, in the squad for next week's first Ashes Test, dismissed Andrew Strauss for a duck late on day one. Tait also had a good shout for lbw against Ian Bell turned down as South Australia looked to turn the screw.
Cook and night-watchman Matthew Hoggard survived five overs in front of a packed slip cordon to get through to stumps.
Collingwood, who has averaged 48.80 in Tests in 2006, would probably have been the player to miss out had Trescothick stayed with the squad.
"I wished it hadn't been under these circumstances but it looks as though my spot in the team is safe," Collingwood told BBC Sport.
"Throughout your career, you are asked to take opportunities and this is my chance to cement a Test place."
Collingwood will take Trescothick's place in the slip cordon when the first Test starts in Brisbane on 23 November.
"Collingwood has fielded in the slips for Durham so he will field third slip when Fred [Flintoff] isn't bowling and second slip when he is," said coach Duncan Fletcher.
