Gunfire has been reported at the Champaign campus of the University of Illinois, according to local media. Shots were fired in an alleyway and the shooter has left the area, police say. One person was killed and five others injured on Sunday morning in two shootings near the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, which the police believe to be related.
The Illinois police said that one person has been killed and four others injured in the overnight shooting. The first shooting occurred 12:30 a.m. after an argument at a house party spilled into the street and caused a brawl, during which shots were fired, the police said.
Four people received gunshot wounds in the incident. One person died of their wounds, while the others received moderate injuries. Firearms were used on Green Street between Third and Fourth streets, about one block away from 'The Red Lion', a popular campus bar.
A fifth victim was hit by a vehicle as he attempted to flee the are and received non-life-threatening injuries according to police. Four people, who weren’t involved in the fight, received gunshot wounds in the incident.
One of them died of his wounds in hospital. The deceased was identified as a 22-year-old George Korchev from the Illinois suburb of Mudelein.
Several shots have been fired on Green Street between Third and Fourth streets, the Daily Illini reported, citing an Illini Alert sent out on Sunday morning. The alert recommended local residents to stay away from the area, notifying of more information to come. The rest of the victims were treated by doctors after being diagnosed with moderate injuries. One of the injured was confirmed to be a student at the Urbana-Champaign University.
Earlier in the day, Sergeant Rickey W. Bell of the University of Illinois Police Department did not confirm or deny any shootings, but added that the crime scene will be closed until at least 6am local time. A fifth person was also hurt as he was hit by a vehicle as he attempted to flee the area and received non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting took place outside a local post office and about one block away from 'The Red Lion', a popular campus bar. About half an hour after the first incident, the second shooting took place nearby and led to another person being hospitalized non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
No arrests have been made as the police are looking for suspect or suspects in both shootings as well as the driver of the car involved in hit and run.
Initial reports in social media suggested up to nine people were shot, all now hospitalized. The investigation believes that the two incidents at Illinois University campus are likely to be related.
Other conflicting reports claimed one person was killed.
