Brown targets economic troubles I can save economy again - Brown
(40 minutes later)
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said that national and international action is needed to help the UK through the current economic difficulties. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said he is the right man to steer the country through difficult economic times.
Mr Brown, doing a round of interviews, said the huge rise in oil prices showed "something's wrong" in that market. He blamed "international factors" for rising oil and food prices and housing market problems and said he would take the right action to deal with them.
He also said he would press for moves to tackle rising global food prices. Asked if he should stay in his job he said: "There are many people who could take over but I think I can steer this economy through difficult times."
Mr Brown said he had kept the economy growing for 11 years, and said the "key element" of his job was "coming through these difficult economic times". "I have done it before and I can do it again," he told the BBC.
As well as international action on food and oil prices, he said he had already taken domestic action to help the housing market.
