Detectives are continuing to question a 33-year-old man in connection with the deaths of his two children and their mother and uncle.

Officers said they received a call from a man saying he had killed his "entire family" in Newcastle.

They later found the bodies of Olufunke Sobo, 36, her brother Yemi, and her children, Abigail, 12, and Steven Crampton, five, in Hawthorn Gardens.

Neil Crampton was arrested on Tuesday and taken into custody on Thursday.

He had not been medically fit enough to be interviewed earlier.

As inquiries continued, police asked anyone who saw the family on Monday or Tuesday morning to come forward.

They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who noticed a maroon Ford Focus parked outside the family home on those days.

Post-mortem examinations to determine how the four died are expected to be completed on Friday.

The bodies of the two adults were found downstairs at the house and those of the children were in separate rooms upstairs.
