In 2013, 79 people were killed in Spain's worst rail disaster when a high-speed train went off the tracks and slammed into a wall near Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia.  A witness told the Levante newspaper the train began to derail as it arrived at the station and collided with a lampost at the side of the track.
The train company responsible for the service, Renfe, confirmed the incident on Twitter and expressed its condolences towards the victims and their families.
The local branch of the political party, Ciudadanos, also tweeted to expressed its condolences and announced it had suspended campaigning for the day as a mark of respect.
