The shooter is dead and a student is wounded, ABC News reported, citing local police. The shooter was female, Brewster County Sheriff Ronny told Alpine Radio. Five shots were fired.
Alpine has a population of about 5,900 people, and there are approximately 1,000 students at the city’s only high school. It is the county seat for Brewster County, and the home of Ross State University. The police officer was shot during a friendly fire incident, according to the Alpine Avalanche.
The rural city is about two hours southwest of Odessa. Authorities are now directing resources to Sul Ross State University, also in Alpine, after receiving a threat against the school,  Dodson told Marfa Public Radio.
