He is understood to have been arrested at Terminal Two on Friday while waiting for a Pakistan International Airlines flight to Lahore. Greater Manchester Police said they had made an arrest under the Terrorism Act, but would not confirm the man's name.
An associate of the man told the BBC he was flying to Pakistan to visit his sick mother. A spokesman said: "Greater Manchester Police's counter-terrorism unit arrested one person under the Terrorism Act on the afternoon of Friday 9 May.
