Former MP's funeral to take place Former Lib Dem MP laid to rest
(about 18 hours later)
The funeral of the former MP for Argyll and Bute Ray Michie is due to take place on Saturday. Family, friends and colleagues have attended the funeral of the MP Ray Michie, who died at the age of 74.
Lady Michie died at her home in Oban earlier this week at the age of 74. She was being treated for cancer. Former Liberal Democrat leaders Charles Kennedy MP and Sir Menzies Campbell MP were among the congregation for the service at Oban Parish church.
She was elected to the Argyll seat in 1987 and remained MP until she stood down from parliament in 2001, becoming a member of the House of Lords. In his eulogy, Jim Wallace, the former leader of the party in Scotland, told mourners that Lady Michie was passionate about Highland culture.
The daughter of Lord and Lady Bannerman of Kildonan, she chaired the Scottish Liberal Democrats from 1991 until 1993. She was later laid to rest in Oban cemetery.
Ray Michie was first elected as the MP for Argyll and Bute in 1987.
She was, Mr Wallace said, a "people person".
After standing down from her parliamentary seat in 2001, she joined the House of Lords, becoming the first peer to pledge the oath of allegiance in Gaelic.
Her interest in the language was reflected at Saturday's service, at which Taynuilt Gaelic choir sang a short anthem.
