Two escape unhurt in plane crash

Two people have escaped unhurt after their plane crashed, losing both wings and splitting the fuselage in two at an airfield in Hampshire.

The Piper PA-28 light aircraft overshot the runway at Popham Airfield at Micheldever on Saturday night.

The pilot and passenger, aged 51 and 44, managed to get out before fire crews arrived.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch is investigating the cause of the crash at about 2110 BST.

Three fire crews were called to secure the plane wreckage, which was leaking fuel.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: "A Piper PA-28 light aircraft was involved in an incident which resulted in the aircraft losing both wings and the fuselage breaking in two.

"The Air Accident Investigation Branch is dealing with the incident."
