Police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, are currently trying to neutralize a gunman who reportedly shot up to eight officers, killing at least two, according to local media citing the mayor's office, as well as social media accounts. At least three police officers were killed and four to seven more were injured when they were shot by an unknown gunman, or gunmen, in the state capital of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sunday, the mayor’s office said, according to media reports.
According to conflicting reports, at least three Baton Rouge officers are feared dead, WAFB reported. Earlier reports had said up to eight police officers had been shot, at least two of them dead.
It added that the shootout began in the early hours of Sunday morning on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway in Baton Rouge, less than one mile from police headquarters. The incident reportedly took place at Hammond Aire Shopping Center. The injured police officers have been transported to Our Lady of the Lake hospital guarded by policemen armed with long guns wearing bulletproof vests, media report.
According to reports, two hospitals in Baton Rouge are on lockdown with police guards.
WAFB said that the shootout began in the early hours of Sunday morning on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway in Baton Rouge, less than one mile from police headquarters. The incident reportedly took place at Hammond Aire Shopping Center.
The officers involved in the episode were reportedly from the Baton Rouge Police Department and East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Baton Rouge police responded to a call reporting a “suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle,” a CNN source said, adding that the person opened fire as soon as the police squad arrived.
“There is still an active scene. They are investigating,” Kip Holden, the mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish told, CNN. “Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything.”
“Everything is moving fast and I have not been able to verify everything,” he noted, adding that the gunman is believed to be down.
