The departure of Gove was among May’s first moves on Thursday, after she made six key appointments the evening before. Among the other casualties were John Whittingdale, the culture secretary, and Oliver Letwin the Cabinet Office minister. With almost all jobs changing hands, the few non-movers were Jeremy Hunt at health, Michael Fallon as defence secretary and Alun Cairns at the Wales office. Of the 21 cabinet posts announced, seven were women, almost exactly the same proportion as under David Cameron.
Stephen Crabb, the work and pensions secretary and one of the contenders for David Cameron’s job, said he had resigned from the government “in the best interests of my family”. This came in the wake of a story in the Times in which it was revealed that Crabb, who is married, had sent sexually explicit social media messages to a young woman. One of the major changes was structural, with the announcement that Greg Clark, formerly the communities secretary, is to head a newly created department for business, energy and industrial strategy. This comprises what was left of the business department after large sections were transferred to other ministries and taking in energy and climate change, and brought criticism that May was not treating climate change seriously.
Despite numerous reports that Jeremy Hunt was going to lose his job as health secretary, Downing Street said he would remain in the role. Hunt tweeted that reports of his demise had been greatly exaggerated: In the wake of the first major appointments on Wednesday evening, which saw Philip Hammond become chancellor and Boris Johnson made foreign secretary, the first big move of Thursday was the departure of Gove. Among the other casualties were John Whittingdale, the culture secretary, and Oliver Letwin the Cabinet Office minister.
Also gone was Stephen Crabb, the work and pensions secretary and one of the contenders for David Cameron’s job, though seemingly voluntarily. Crabb said he had resigned from the government “in the best interests of my family”. This followed a story in the Times at the weekend in which it was revealed that Crabb, who is married, had sent sexually explicit social media messages to a young woman.

Villiers replacement as Northern Ireland secretary was later confirmed as James Brokenshire. It was an expected first cabinet position for a man who had spent five years as a junior minister in May’s Home Office, and was among the early backers for her leadership campaign. The position could grow in importance in the coming years, as Northern Ireland, which voted in favour of remaining in the European Union, wrestles with the implications of Brexit.Villiers replacement as Northern Ireland secretary was later confirmed as James Brokenshire. Greening has been promoted to education secretary and minister for women and equalities, moving from international development. The first post announced was Philip Hammond becoming chancellor of the exchequer. The former foreign secretary arrived at Downing Street to learn the news just as his predecessor George Osborne left via a back entrance after being sacked. As well as Hammond and Johnson, another major post announced on Wednesday were home secretary , which went to Amber Rudd, the former energy secretary who only entered parliament in 2010.
Then came more unexpected news, as Hammond’s old role as foreign secretary went to Boris Johnson. The former London mayor had been tipped to succeed Cameron after the EU referendum but his stock had fallen drastically after he left the leadership race when challenged by his former ally Gove. Two other jobs were given to strong Brexit supporters brought back from the cold. David Davis took on the new job of secretary of state for exiting the EU, six years after he resigned as shadow home secretary to refight his parliamentary seat in a protest over detention without trial for terror suspects.

Liam Fox, who quit as defence secretary in 2011 amid revelations his close friend, the lobbyist Adam Werritty, had travelled with him on official business, was made secretary of another new ministry for international trade.
Two other crucial posts went to strong Brexit supporters brought back from the cold. David Davis took on the new job of secretary of state for exiting the European Union, six years after he resigned as shadow home secretary to re-fight his parliamentary seat in a protest over detention without trial for terror suspects. The new chief secretary to the Treasury was announced as David Gauke, who moves up a place in the pecking order in the department, while David Mundell remains as secretary of state for Scotland, little surprise as he is the only Tory MP in the country.
Liam Fox, who quit as defence secretary in 2011 amid revelations his close friend, the lobbyist Adam Werritty, had travelled with him on official business, was made secretary of another new ministry, for international trade. The final appointment was David Liddington as leader of the Commons, a very late debut in cabinet for the former Europe minister, who has been in parliament since 1992.
The other announcement on Wednesday evening was that Michael Fallon would remain in his job as defence secretary.
