An 18-year-old tourist lost his foot in an explosion in New York’s Central Park, the cause of which is still unknown with some reports suggesting fireworks. Journalist Sarah Maslin Nir reported running to the scene after hearing a “huge” explosion to find “a young man with his left leg blown off.”  The young man was climbing down from a rock structure with his two friends when he stepped onto an explosive, severely injuring his left foot. 
"He stepped on a rock or some object and there was an explosion that followed," a NYPD spokesman told Reuters.

Multiple eye witnesses reported seeing the man climb down from a rock structure and stepping on something that exploded.  The victim was reportedly taken to Bellevue hospital where he is said to be in a critical but stable condition. 
The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but police are investigating whether the blast was caused by a firework, a day before NYC's Fourth of July pyrotechnics show.

The definite cause of the explosion is still unconfirmed, however an update from NY police is expected imminently.
