Fletcher revealed that there had been lengthy discussions in the England camp about how to deal with the opener's problems.

"I called for a meeting, because two days before he was feeling uncomfortable - and I just thought it was best for this tour at that stage if he went back home," said Fletcher.
"We decided that maybe the best thing would be to bring his wife and kids out here early.
"I wasn't too happy with that, and Tuesday morning I called another meeting and decided that I was going to have to speak to Marcus after the game and say with a difficult tour ahead I wasn't too happy.
"I was going to discuss whether he would fly back and not let his wife come out here."
"At that point - where I'd have to speak to him with a very difficult decision which I was very uncomfortable about - it was taken out of my hands.
"Marcus came off the field in the afternoon, and there was a recurrence of the problem he had in India.
"I left it to the doctor to sit and have a chat with him - and after a while, we spoke and said it was best if he did go home."

The three men in the frame to take Trescothick's place in the squad have far less Test experience than the Somerset man.
