Britain votes for Brexit: share your responses Britain votes for Brexit: how do you feel about the result?
(about 9 hours later)
Britain is waking up to the news of its impending departure from the European Union. With a high turnout and with voting still underway at the time of writing, Leave look set to win by 52% to 48%. England and Wales voted to Leave, while Northern Ireland and Scotland both backed Remain, raising the possibility of a new Scottish independence referendum in the future. Britain has voted to leave the European Union. A high turnout saw more than 30 million people turn out to vote - the highest turnout at a UK-wide vote since 1992. Yet despite last minute opinion polling showing a swing to remain, 17,410,742 compared to 16,141,241 decided to end Britain’s relationship with the EU.
David Cameron’s future comes under intense scrutiny, as Nigel Farage heralds a result that he called Britain’s “Independence Day”.
