EU referendum results night: what's the mood like where you are? Britain votes for Brexit: share your responses
(about 5 hours later)
Polls have closed in Britain’s historic EU referendum, and counting has begun. We want to know what the mood’s like where you are as the UK awaits the results. Britain is waking up to the news of its impending departure from the European Union. With a high turnout and with voting still underway at the time of writing, Leave look set to win by 52% to 48%. England and Wales voted to Leave, while Northern Ireland and Scotland both backed Remain, raising the possibility of a new Scottish independence referendum in the future.
A record 46.5 million voters across the UK and Gibraltar were registered to vote, with early indications suggesting a high turnout; some clerks reported 70% turnout in some areas, higher than the 66% in the 2015 general election. David Cameron’s future comes under intense scrutiny, as Nigel Farage heralds a result that he called Britain’s “Independence Day”.
