(about 5 hours later)
At least four people were killed and several more wounded in a terror attack in central Tel Aviv, Israeli police said. According to some reports, the two gunmen behind the shooting were dressed like “ultra-Orthodox Jews.” Four people have been killed and several more wounded after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire in a shopping and restaurant area in central Tel Aviv. The attackers, wearing black suits described by witnesses as ultra-Orthodox Jewish outfits, have been detained.
Two Palestinian gunmen from the West Bank carried out the shooting referred to as a "harsh terror attack," AP cited Tel Aviv district police commander Moshe Edri as saying. “Two terrorists opened fire at civilians,” Tel Aviv district police commander Moshe Edri said, calling the shooting a “harsh terror attack.”
Three people were killed in the attack and at least six injured, some critically. Israel’s Channel 2 TV later reported that one of those badly injured died in the hospital. Horrifying footage from the café where the incident took place showed people leaping from their dining tables and running in panic. Two men clad in black suits could be seen shooting at diners.
Both of the attackers have been detained, police official said, adding that one was taken to the hospital for treatment. “Two terrorists arrived at the complex and while firing, and to our regret, nine people were injured to different degrees,” he said. Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital confirmed that four Israelis who arrived in the most critical condition died of their wounds.
The shooting incident took place at Sarona Market, a popular shopping center in the city center, on Wednesday evening. The market is located close to the Israeli Defense Ministry and General Staff buildings. One of the attackers surrendered to police, while the second suspect was wounded during his arrest, according to Edri. The latter is currently being treated for a gunfire wound in a hospital. The assailants were from a Palestinian village Yatta located near the West Bank town of Hebron, according to police.
Two suspects, referred to as "terrorists," have been captured by police, Micky Rosenfeld, the Israel police’s spokesman for the foreign media, said on Twitter.
According to initial reports, an armed man opened fire at passers-by in the area. Reports on social media suggested there were two shooters, “dressed as ultra-orthodox Jews.”
The perpetrators were “two Palestinians from the South Hebron Hills,” the Jerusalem Post cited Likud party member Amir Ohana as saying. The politician, who arrived at the scene, told reporters: “We need to see who sent the terrorists and to find them.”
The area has been sealed off by law enforcement, and people have been warned to stay away from the scene. The incident took place at Sarona Market, a popular shopping site in central Tel Aviv on Wednesday evening. It is located close to the Israeli Defense Ministry and General Staff buildings.
The director of the crowded tourist spot, Shlomi Hajaj, told Israel’s Channel 10 that security guards standing at the entrance had “prevented the attackers from entering the facility, averting a bigger disaster as the compound was packed with people.”
A witness told Channel 10 that the shooting occurred as she was celebrating her son’s birthday: “We ran like lightning with the baby and the stroller… I yelled at people who didn't understand what was happening to run.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack a “cold-blooded murder by despicable terrorists.”
Islamic militant group Hamas praised the terror attack and the group’s official Mushir al-Masri said it was a “heroic operation” threatening “Zionists” with more “surprises.” Hamas, though, did not claim responsibility for the shootings.
