Go East! German internal migration reversed 1st time since fall of Berlin Wall Go East! German internal migration reversed 1st time since fall of Berlin Wall
(35 minutes later)
The persistent trend of German internal migration directed westward for decades has been finally broken, with more Germans choosing eastern lands for a permanent stay than vice versa for the first time since 1990. More Germans are choosing to live in the former East Germany than West, according to the newly released statistics, and Berlin is the trend-breaker.
In fairness, it must be noted that the statistics of the capital, Berlin, have played the decisive role in the new trend, stripping the eastern lands of their ‘bleeding’ status in terms of diminishing human resources. The city attracts young Germans seeking opportunities in creative industries who can also tap into the relatively accessible property market.
The report published by the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) on Monday covers a timeline from 1991 to 2014. The BiB informs that the tendency showed first signs of a change in 2012. In 2014 reported 134,765 people moved on from East to West Germany, while 141,966 internal migrants from West have come to East Germany. The relatively small positive difference of 7,201 in favor of the East was reached because of the capital. Without Berlin, the difference would still be 3,326 in-migrants in favor of the West. “Berlin and its surroundings have been attractive to migrants from the west. Without Berlin, net immigration would still be negative,” the Local quotes the institute as saying.“Berlin and its surroundings have been attractive to migrants from the west. It has taken a quarter of a century to change things and minds, and the new tendency is now obvious: lower living expenses, higher remunerations and brighter career opportunities are slowly, yet steadily, pulling Germany’s economically-active population eastwards. It has taken a quarter of a century to change things and minds, and the new tendency is now obvious: lower living expenses, higher remunerations and brighter career opportunities are slowly, yet steadily, pulling Germany’s economically-active population eastwards.
In 2014, the German edition of the Huffington Post singled out several reasons why Eastern Germany is better than Western. Among seven such points the media outlet named a larger number of people with a college diploma, a smaller difference between average salaries for men and women (8 percent against a 24-percent gap in the West), larger pensions in the East for both men and especially for women, larger number of female managers in the East and lower rental rates in East Berlin, ranked only ninth in the list of Germany’s 10 most expensive cities. In 2014, the German edition of the Huffington Post singled out several reasons why Eastern Germany is better than Western.
