To the Editor:

Re “How Austin Beat Uber,” by Richard Parker (Op-Ed, May 12):

For residents of Austin like my son, who has cerebral palsy, Uber and Lyft were life-changing. With ride-sharing he experienced a level of independence that was both unprecedented and truly liberating. To say it was a “convenience for the few” badly misses the mark. And now we are left with what, exactly?

In one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the nation, we have a mass transit system that consists of public buses with limited hours of operation and routes that change unpredictably.

After the opponents of Proposition 1 — a revised ride-sharing ordinance backed by Uber and Lyft — are done celebrating their victory, perhaps they will find the time to propose real solutions.
