Two more people have been arrested after a Staffordshire bull terrier bit 11 children at a park.

The attack happened on Wednesday night near play equipment at Burns Avenue park in Blyth, Northumberland, leaving nine children requiring hospital treatment.

Parents ran to help after hearing screams, and carried children to safety before managing to restrain the dog.

Northumbria police said a 34-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control.

A 37-year-old woman who was arrested on Thursday has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Supt Mick Paterson, from Northern Area Command, said: “Thankfully these incidents are extremely rare but we recognise that this has been a traumatic incident for those involved, their families and for the wider community.

“The dog remains in a secured kennel at this time. Blyth’s local neighbourhood officers continue to speak to those involved and reassure local residents who have any concerns.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101.
