Driver quizzed as boy, 10, dies Boy, 10, dies 'falling off lorry'

A lorry driver is being questioned by Gwent Police after a 10-year-old boy died following a collision on a busy road. Children have been warned not to play around traffic on a busy main road after a 10-year-old boy died apparently falling from the back of a lorry.
The incident happened just before 1800 BST on Tuesday on the southern distributor road, off Mill Parade in the Pill area of Newport. Jordan Lee Widdall-Hughes, from Pill, Newport, was fatally injured falling on the Southern Distributor Road (SDR).
The boy, from Newport, was taken to the city's Royal Gwent Hospital with head injuries, where he died. The incident happened just before 1800 BST on Tuesday.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The lorry driver was initially arrested on suspicious on causing death by dangerous driving, but he is now being treated as a witness, police said.
Insp Simon Powell-Jones, Gwent Police said: "Inquiries are currently ongoing to establish the circumstances and cause of the accident." Gwent Police said local residents in Pill had spoken of a rise in the number of children playing on or around moving vehicles.
Officers asked any witnesses to contact them on 01633 83811. Ch Insp John Pavett said: "This is a terrible tragedy and unfortunately Jordan's actions have had fatal consequences.
"The SDR is a major trunk road, which is busy at all times during the day.
"We want to send out a clear message to other children and their families that it is not a playground nor a place for practical jokes, which can - as we have seen - go tragically wrong.
"Our condolences go out to Jordan's family."
