Six people were being evaluated Thursday by emergency medical crews after an envelope containing a white powdery substance was mailed to Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign office at Trump Tower in New York City. Six people, including a police officer, were being evaluated by emergency medical responders after an envelope containing white powder was discovered at the campaign office of Donald J. Trump at the Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday night, the authorities said.
The crews were called to the building, at Fifth Avenue and 56th Street in Manhattan, which is also the home of Mr. Trump, around 8 p.m. The Fire Department said it was awaiting the results of tests to determine whether the substance was dangerous. Firefighters from the department’s hazardous materials unit were at the scene.
The police said a Trump staff member opened the letter containing the powder and immediately called the authorities. It was unclear if the envelope also contained a letter. A spokeswoman for Mr. Trump, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, referred inquiries to the United States Secret Service. A press officer at the agency was not immediately available to comment on Thursday night.
The six people who were isolated and evaluated at the scene included five Trump staff members and a police officer who responded to the call. Mr. Trump was campaigning in California that night.
A campaign spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Police Department said it was called around 7:30 p.m. to the fifth floor of the tower, located at 725 Fifth Avenue at 56th Street, for a report of an envelope containing white powder. Mr. Trump’s home is also in the building.
In March, an envelope containing a nonhazardous white powder and a threatening letter was sent to the Manhattan apartment of Mr. Trump’s son Eric. The envelope had been mailed to Mr. Trump’s campaign office, where a staff member opened it and immediately called the police, The Associated Press reported.
In March, the authorities investigated a letter containing a nonhazardous white powder that was sent to the Manhattan apartment of one of Mr. Trump’s sons, Eric.
