A rugby player has died after collapsing following an amateur match on Tyneside, say police.

The 36-year-old North Shields man fell ill in the changing rooms after leaving the pitch during a game at the town's Percy Park Rugby Club.

He was taken to North Tyneside General Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Northumbria Police said the death, on Saturday afternoon, is not being treated as suspicious.

It happened during a game between Percy Park and Berwick Rugby Club's 3rd team.

A spokesman said: "At the present time there is nothing to indicate that this is anything more than a tragic accident."

He added that a report had been submitted to the coroner.
