To the Editor:

The looming Dark Age described by William B. Gail in his April 19 Op-Ed article about climate change offers a sobering, grim counterpoint to the upbeat news of the Paris Agreement. But as a global society we have yet to reach peak knowledge.

As our recent survey of United States science teachers found and other research affirms, society has yet to fully grasp or respond to the causes, effects, risks and range of responses to global climate change.

Two of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — quality education and climate change action — must be prioritized to minimize human impacts on the planet and maximize our ability to adequately respond to these changes that humans as a powerful force of nature have set in motion.
