A New South Wales man was on the run on Monday after his partner was bludgeoned to death and his son ended up in hospital.

Stephen Boyd, 51, was last seen leaving the home where the body of Tina Kontozis was found on Sunday afternoon in Bundeena, south of Sydney.

Kontozis, also 51, is believed to have been bashed to death with a cricket bat but police have not confirmed this and would not say whether a bat or similar items had been seized from the property.

Det Sgt Terry O’Neill said Boyd was known to police. “Mr Boyd is the person we would like to speak to about this incident,” O’Neill said.

It is believed the couple were estranged and had a son aged 17. The teenager was at home during part of the attack and suffered an injury to his arm.

He sought refuge at the home of a neighbour, who called police. O’Neill said the teenager’s condition was satisfactory. “He is in hospital. Obviously he is very upset.”

Several of Boyd’s friends had tried to contact him and told police they were concerned for his welfare, O’Neill said.

Police believed Boyd was still in the Sydney area on Monday, and O’Neill asked him to hand himself in. He said members of the public should not approach Boyd and should call triple-zero if they saw him.
