A former detective has bagged an apprenticeship with a funeral company at the age of 67.

Robert Brown, a retired detective sergeant from Canterbury in Kent, is the 1,500th apprentice to be taken on by Co-op Funeralcare.

He is also the oldest apprentice to be hired on the firm's apprentice scheme.

He said: "After a 30-year stint with the police, I did wonder how I would find working in funerals, but I love it. I only wish I'd done it sooner."

The Co-op scheme has attracted ex-paramedics and car salesmen, as well as school leavers.

Managing director Robert Lancaster said: "Providing they possess compassion, empathy, excellent service and organisational skills, we can teach everything else on the job."
