The Duke of Edinburgh's condition is to be assessed by consultants later after he spent a third night in hospital with a chest infection.

Prince Philip, 86, was admitted to King Edward VII's Hospital in London on Thursday after developing a heavy cold which caused him to cancel engagements.

Royal officials stress the hospital stay is a precaution, not an emergency.

They say his Monday engagements have not been cancelled, prompting speculation he is set to be discharged.

The Duke is said to have spent part of Saturday catching up with paperwork from his hospital bed.

Well-wishers including actress Joanna Lumley called at the clinic to deliver flowers.

Monday appointments

On Monday, he is due to attend two engagements at Windsor Castle, a council meeting and a dinner to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel.

He is also scheduled to accompany the Queen on a visit to the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth on Thursday.

The Duke cancelled engagements last week including attending a memorial service for Everest hero Sir Edmund Hillary.

He also pulled out of a dinner for Macmillan Cancer Support at the Harte and Garter Hotel in Windsor on Friday.

His last official public role was during French President Nicolas Sarkozy's state visit to Britain on 26 March.

Prince Philip is being treated by Professor John Cunningham, whose speciality is general medicine.
