Tory MP mugged on Italian holiday MP's anger over mugging reaction
(1 day later)
A Conservative MP and his wife on an Italian holiday have been mugged for Rolex watches worth a total of £5,500. The Clwyd West MP who was mugged for Rolex watches worth £5,500 on a holiday has criticised Italian authorities for their handling of street crime.
David and Sara Jones were robbed as they walked through the historic city centre of Naples. David Jones, 54, and his wife Sara were robbed of their watches on Naples' Oxford Street - the Via Toledo.
The Clwyd West MP and his wife were on holiday on the Amalfi coast. The city's mayor Rosa Russo Iervolino said she herself had been mugged while abroad and "it can happen anywhere".
Police said Mrs Jones, a nurse, lost a £3,000 gold and diamond encrusted Rolex first, and then her husband had a similar £2,500 watch taken. They were not hurt, but did not want to comment. The MP called the comments "pathetic", saying they were "victims of a third world crime in a first world city".
A Naples police spokeswoman said Mr and Mrs Jones had been shocked by the mugging as they were crossing the city's Piazza Dante. The MP, 54, and his wife Sara, a 49-year-old nurse, were on a week-long holiday on the Amalfi coast when they fell victim to the thieves.
Naples has had problems with motorised muggings Mrs Jones, a nurse, lost a £3,000 gold and diamond encrusted Rolex first, and then her husband had a similar £2,500 watch taken. Neither were injured although both were left shocked.
Insp Antonella Caldavese said: ""The mugging was carried out at lightning speed from behind and Mr Jones and his wife were caught completely by surprise. It's a shame that a city such as Naples is spoilt by uncontrollable crime MP David Jones
"They were passing through Naples as part of their holiday and were staying on the Amalfi coast. Mr Jones tried to react but was unable to do so." As he was recovering at his hotel on the island of Capri, Mr Jones heard the Naples mayor's comments and later issued an angry response.
A British Consulate spokeswoman said they were aware of the incident. He said; "I know Naples and I know its reputation but we were not walking along some dodgy side street but along a busy street in broad daylight when we had watches ripped off our wrists.
Muggings by gangs on motorbikes who target tourists' watches and handbags are a well-documented problem in Naples. "You just don't expect this sort of thing to happen in a European city in the 21st Century and I wholeheartedly disagree with her attitude.
Mr Jones, a lawyer and former north Wales Welsh Assembly Member, was elected to Parliament in May 2005. "What she said and what happened to us is a sad commentary of the state of safety in Naples - it's such a shame that the mayor of Naples has no control over her city.
'Decent watch'
"She is obviously defending her city but I am not at all happy with the safety aspect - we just spent four days in Rome and never felt nervous whereas in Naples it was a different story all together.
Mr Jones added: "It's a shame that a city such as Naples is spoilt by uncontrollable crime - the mayor wants to take a look at the fact that a visitor cannot walk safely down a street wearing a decent watch."
However, a spokeswoman for the socialist mayor said: "The mayor stands by what she said - she was mugged abroad twice with her daughter.
"It can happen anywhere. It's a shame Mr Jones feels this way but we are in fact doing all we can to fight crime."
